Atorvastatin vs Rosuvastatin: which statin for your cholesterol numbers?
The short answer
Both are modern, once-daily statins that cut heart-attack and stroke risk. Rosuvastatin is the more potent molecule milligram-for-milligram; atorvastatin has the deeper generic market in Nigeria and decades of outcome data. In practice, the right one is usually whichever reaches your LDL target at a price you'll actually keep paying — because statins only work if you stay on them.
If a doctor has put you on a statin, the choice between these two is less dramatic than pharmacy marketing implies. Ten milligrams of rosuvastatin lowers LDL roughly as much as twenty of atorvastatin, so 'stronger' mostly means smaller tablets, not better protection. Both are taken once daily, any time of day, and both have generic versions in Nigeria — atorvastatin's generics are more numerous and often cheaper.
What actually determines your result is consistency. Statins prevent heart attacks over years, silently; stopping when you 'feel fine' (you will — high cholesterol has no symptoms) forfeits the protection. Genuine muscle aches on one statin are worth reporting rather than enduring: switching to the other, or adjusting dose, resolves most cases.
