Amlodipine vs Lisinopril: which blood pressure tablet fits you?

Hypertension guidelines — including Nigeria's — don't treat these two as interchangeable. Blood pressure in people of Black African origin tends to respond better to calcium-channel blockers like amlodipine (or a diuretic) as the first step, while ACE inhibitors like lisinopril, used alone, work less reliably in this group and carry a higher chance of angioedema (sudden facial or throat swelling). That calculus flips when diabetes or kidney protein enters the picture: there, lisinopril's kidney-protective effect makes it the priority.

Each has a signature nuisance worth knowing in advance. Amlodipine can swell the ankles — annoying, dose-related, not dangerous. Lisinopril causes a persistent dry cough in a meaningful minority; if it starts, the fix is switching drugs, not cough syrup. Whichever you take: hypertension has no symptoms, treatment is long-term, and the silent stroke it prevents is the whole point.
